There’s more to color than meets the eye. In this playful, hands-on workshop, we’ll unlock the secrets of color mixing using a limited palette.
Zoom Introduction: You will begin the day before with a Zoom introduction to the workshop where Karen will give a short color-mixing demo. She will provide students with information on color theory and a reference photo for the next day.
At Crow’s Nest Preserve: In person, Karen will guide you through doing your own color exercises where you’ll learn to mix a wide range of colors; create atmosphere and harmony; and use temperature, value, and contrast to create an expressive landscape painting.
We’ll break for a half-hour lunch. (Karen will provide snacks, but please bring a bagged lunch.)
In the second half of the day, you’ll apply your new skills to a small painting using a landscape reference provided by the instructor. This workshop is perfect for beginners and intermediate painters who want to deepen their understanding of color in a relaxed, encouraging environment.

Crow’s Nest’s forests are filled with oak, hickory, tuliptree, black gum, beech, and maple trees. The preserve’s meadows feature native grasses and wildflowers, while the tradition of Chester County farming continues in areas dedicated to agriculture.
Crow’s Nest is part of Hopewell Big Woods, a vast, unbroken forest about 114 square miles—almost the size of the City of Philadelphia. Just next door, you’ll find French Creek State Park and Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, making Crow’s Nest part of one of the largest areas of protected land in the region.
