SUMMARY:Goldenrods and Asters: Autumn’s Superstars
DESCRIPTION:Join us in collaboration with Morris Arboretum to learn how goldenrods and asters can add beauty and biodiversity to any property. After an indoor lecture\, we will move out into Stoneleigh’s gardens to explore the plants and their pollinators in the landscape.   \n With their stunning flowers\, goldenrods and asters are two of the hallmark plants of autumn. Not only are they beautiful\, but these plants also support hundreds of insects\, from bees and wasps to caterpillars and butterflies. This late-summer pairing offers crucial support to native insects\, and blooms after many other species have already flowered\, providing both beauty and wildlife resources all the way through the fall.  \n Stoneleigh’s Engagement Manager Samantha Nestory\, will lead this program. Sam holds ecology and entomology degrees from the University of Delaware and is passionate about ecological gardening\, native plants\, and insect conservation.   \n Please visit the Morris Arboretum website to register. Find this workshop listed under the “Horticulture & Design” category of courses.   \n \n register now

SUMMARY:Self-Led Biodiversity Bashes
DESCRIPTION:Initiate your own exploration of the great outdoors at one of our preserves\, open from dawn to dusk. Some preserves are only open six days a week (one day reserved for rest; please check the website before you visit). \nOnce you upload your photo discovery to iNaturalist\, it will automatically appear in our “project\,” which allows Natural Lands staff\, volunteers\, and scientists to see what species are present at our preserved open spaces. This will further educate future land management practices\, and augment our knowledge of the rich biodiversity living at these special places.  \nThis initiative will last throughout the month of September\, but that doesn’t mean community science comes to an end. Any time you are visiting our preserves\, you are welcome to take as many photographs as you would like and submit them to iNaturalist.  \nWe ask that you do not harm any of the flora\, fauna\, or funga that you encounter or study on these Biodiversity Bashes. Please practice the Leave No Trace policy and only take photos as souvenirs. We also ask that you remain on-trail at all times\, and do not enter sensitive habitat areas.

SUMMARY:Song for Autumn: A Nature Poetry Share
DESCRIPTION:Don’t you imagine the leaves dream now  \nhow comfortable it will be to touch  \nthe earth instead of the  \nnothingness of the air and the endless  \nfreshets of wind? And don’t you think  \nthe trees\, especially those with  \nmossy hollows\, are beginning to look for  \nthe birds that will come—six\, a dozen—to sleep  \ninside their bodies? And don’t you hear  \nthe goldenrod whispering goodbye\,  \nthe everlasting being crowned with the first  \ntuffets of snow? The pond  \nstiffens and the white field over which  \nthe fox runs so quickly brings out  \nits long blue shadows. The wind wags  \nits many tails. And in the evening  \nthe piled firewood shifts a little  \nlonging to be on its way.  \n~ Mary Oliver  \nFor as long as there has existed the written word\, people have written about the natural world. To explore their connection with and deepen their understanding of it. To express appreciation for its beauty and to raise awareness about issues that threaten it. To reflect on their place within the larger ecosystem that includes us all.  \nJoin us at this special event beneath the great white oak to come together with an open share of nature-inspired poems. Share your own poems\, the poems of others you appreciate\, or simply to listen.  \nThis event will be one for conversation and connection\, not critique; it is not intended as a workshop. Participants may join a short hike around the preserve after the poetry reading.
