SUMMARY:Self-Led Biodiversity Bashes
DESCRIPTION:Initiate your own exploration of the great outdoors at one of our preserves\, open from dawn to dusk. Some preserves are only open six days a week (one day reserved for rest; please check the website before you visit). \nOnce you upload your photo discovery to iNaturalist\, it will automatically appear in our “project\,” which allows Natural Lands staff\, volunteers\, and scientists to see what species are present at our preserved open spaces. This will further educate future land management practices\, and augment our knowledge of the rich biodiversity living at these special places.  \nThis initiative will last throughout the month of September\, but that doesn’t mean community science comes to an end. Any time you are visiting our preserves\, you are welcome to take as many photographs as you would like and submit them to iNaturalist.  \nWe ask that you do not harm any of the flora\, fauna\, or funga that you encounter or study on these Biodiversity Bashes. Please practice the Leave No Trace policy and only take photos as souvenirs. We also ask that you remain on-trail at all times\, and do not enter sensitive habitat areas.

SUMMARY:Song for Autumn: A Nature Poetry Share
DESCRIPTION:Don’t you imagine the leaves dream now  \nhow comfortable it will be to touch  \nthe earth instead of the  \nnothingness of the air and the endless  \nfreshets of wind? And don’t you think  \nthe trees\, especially those with  \nmossy hollows\, are beginning to look for  \nthe birds that will come—six\, a dozen—to sleep  \ninside their bodies? And don’t you hear  \nthe goldenrod whispering goodbye\,  \nthe everlasting being crowned with the first  \ntuffets of snow? The pond  \nstiffens and the white field over which  \nthe fox runs so quickly brings out  \nits long blue shadows. The wind wags  \nits many tails. And in the evening  \nthe piled firewood shifts a little  \nlonging to be on its way.  \n~ Mary Oliver  \nFor as long as there has existed the written word\, people have written about the natural world. To explore their connection with and deepen their understanding of it. To express appreciation for its beauty and to raise awareness about issues that threaten it. To reflect on their place within the larger ecosystem that includes us all.  \nJoin us at this special event beneath the great white oak to come together with an open share of nature-inspired poems. Share your own poems\, the poems of others you appreciate\, or simply to listen.  \nThis event will be one for conversation and connection\, not critique; it is not intended as a workshop. Participants may join a short hike around the preserve after the poetry reading.

SUMMARY:Eco-Printing with Wildflowers Workshop - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:This event is now sold out. Please join us at another outdoor adventure. \nJoin natural dyer and textile artist Laura Hricko for a hands-on workshop at Stoneleigh\, where the surrounding landscape will serve as both inspiration and resource. Using locally grown and native dye flowers and foliage\, this workshop will guide you through the natural dye technique known as “eco-printing” to create either a set of two linen napkins or an organic cotton bandana and silk scarf.   \nAs we work\, we’ll discuss the fundamentals of natural dyeing\, including fiber preparation\, plant selection\, and the unique qualities of plant dyes. While surrounded by the biodiversity that Stoneleigh’s gardens celebrate\, you’ll experience the magic of coaxing color from plants to create lasting prints on fabric and deepen your understanding of sustainable textile art.  \nThis workshop is appropriate for all levels of experience ages 12+.  \nPlease register by September 7\, so we can provide a proper headcount to our instructor. \nAbout the instructor: Laura Hricko is a textile artist\, educator\, and lifelong Philadelphian dedicated to the conviction that art is transformative and capable of enriching the lives of all people. Laura’s artistic practice spans multiple fiber arts techniques including quilting\, mending\, embroidery\, and textile surface design. Most recently\, Laura has been captivated by the processes of natural dyeing\, which allow her to feel a deeper connection with nature and history\, as she employs these ancient craft techniques to coax color from homegrown\, foraged\, and food-waste natural dye sources.   \nTo see more of Laura’s work\, please visit her Instagram page for more photos and videos: @lauravhricko.

Please review “before you go” details. \nCapacity is limited for this small-group event\, and pre-registration is required. If you sign-up\, please plan to participate. If you need to cancel\, please let us know so another volunteer can attend. All are welcome\, ages 12 and up. Minors under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult parent/guardian.
