SUMMARY:Ollie Owl’s Wild Bird Egg Hunt
DESCRIPTION:Kids\, bring your favorite adult and spend the morning with some outdoor playtime at Ollie Owl’s NaturePlayGround. \nChickens aren’t the only birds who lay eggs. In fact\, all birds lay eggs—even owls\, like Ollie. \nVisit Ollie Owl’s NaturePlayGround at ChesLen Preserve for a self-guided\, egg-cellent scavenger hunt. Look for nests and eggs along the trails and the playground space. Peer closely and see if you can figure out what birds they belong to. Enjoy a snack and craft to fit the theme. \nFamilies with young children (ages 18 months to 5 years) are invited to attend these nature discovery events designed to inspire a sense of wonder about the natural world. After all\, today’s children are tomorrow’s conservationists. Families are welcome to stay after the event to enjoy a picnic from home. \nThis event is made possible with generous support from\nThe Kulicke Fund.

SUMMARY:Poetry Circle & Connect: The Peace of Wild Things
DESCRIPTION:For as long as there has existed the written word\, people have written about the natural world. To explore their connection with and deepen their understanding of it. To express an appreciation for its beauty and to raise awareness about issues that threaten it. To reflect on their place within the larger ecosystem that includes us all. \nJoin us on the overlook hill at ChesLen Preserve (weather permitting) to celebrate National Poetry Month with an open share of nature-inspired poems. Share your own poems\, the poems of others you appreciate\, or simply listen.   \nThis event will be one for conversation and connection\, not critique; it is not intended as a workshop.   \nWe’ll gather at the Lenfest Center parking lot before walking to our space.  \nWhen despair for the world grows in me\nand I wake in the night at the least sound\nin fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be\,\nI go and lie down where the wood drake\nrests in his beauty on the water\, and the great heron feeds.\nI come into the peace of wild things\nwho do not tax their lives with forethought\nof grief. I come into the presence of still water.\nAnd I feel above me the day-blind stars\nwaiting with their light. For a time\nI rest in the grace of the world\, and am free.  \n– Wendell Berry

SUMMARY:Birds & Belonging: A Walk with Philly Queer Birders - Waitlist
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: We are currently watching the weather for this event. Rain date will be Sunday\, April 26 (weather permitting)\, or another date to be announced. \nThis event is full. Please join our waitlist below.  \nBirds\, community\, and spring vibes abound. Join us as Natural Lands teams up with Philly Queer Birders for an inclusive\, all-levels bird walk at Hildacy Preserve. \nThis relaxed outing welcomes LGBTQIA+ folks and allies to enjoy spring migration\, learn about local birds\, and connect with community in a supportive outdoor space. \nNo birding experience required—just curiosity and a love of being outside. \nAbout our partners: Philly Queer Birders\, founded in March 2021\, is a monthly group that builds LGBTQIA+ community through birding while exploring Philadelphia’s parks and natural spaces\, plus surrounding areas. The group welcomes all skill levels\, emphasizes accessibility and inclusivity\, and centers queer experiences\, offering a fun\, supportive environment for anyone who appreciates birds. \nThe songbirds\, raptors\, waterfowl\, and shorebirds—about 300 recorded species—that rely on habitats under Natural Lands care are not just beautiful but also essential to the health of our planet. What’s more\, they are environmental indicators\, warning us of climate shifts and other ecosystem changes. \nLearn more about what Natural Lands is doing for bird conservation.
