SUMMARY:Nature as Healer: A (Grief) Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:“The people cannot be healed until the land is healed. The land cannot be healed until the people are healed by the land.” – Martin Prechtel\, author  \nNature can be a great healer for the heartaches we all experience along our journey. Join Naila Francis\, founder of This Hallowed Wilderness\, for a writing workshop to explore the restorative power of nature (right around Earth Day). \nTogether\, we will walk through the shady woods and sunny meadows of Hildacy Preserve\, listening to our inner voices\, on this inspiring nature immersion that also invites us into reciprocal relationship with the land and wildlife. \nBring a notebook and a writing instrument for this workshop. (We will also have some available.) \nOur stroll through the woods will be silent\, followed by some meditative time beside the flowing Crum Creek\, and quiet reflection. \nYou will be invited to share whatever you wish in a “sacred circle\,” but this is not required. The intent of this event is to bring people together\, whatever their losses and struggles\, and to connect with others and the natural world at their own comfort level. \nAbout our instructor: Naila is a grief coach and death midwife who companions people on their grief journey through multiple spaces and practices\, including meditations in nature and the written word.

SUMMARY:Wild Materials: Transforming Found Objects into Art - rescheduled
DESCRIPTION:Please note: this event has been rescheduled for Saturday\, May 23\, 1:00 – 4:00 PM. \nSticks\, stones\, shells\, seeds\, feathers\, bark\, river glass\, found objects\, fibers\, paint…  \nUsing a playful mix of natural materials and unexpected treasures\, we’ll come together to create art. A selection of recycled wooden cigar boxes will be provided for you to choose from and transform. You don’t need to bring anything—however\, you’re welcome to bring small personal objects if you’d like to incorporate them into your piece.  \nEach participant will select a cigar box that will become the stage for imagination and playful making. Our instructor\, Lauren J. Silver\, will open the workshop with a brief introduction to her found-object artmaking practice. Together\, we’ll discuss our intentions for the workshop\, then settle into plenty of time to relax\, experiment\, have fun\, and create side by side.  \nThis workshop is beginner-friendly\, and no prior art or assemblage experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to explore.  \nPlease note: we uphold “Leave No Trace” practices at our preserves\, meaning we take only memories with us. This policy will remain in place during the workshop. We encourage participants to bring found objects from home\, as no materials will be collected from the preserve during the event.  \nAbout the instructor: Lauren J. Silver is a Philadelphia-based\, mixed-medium artist and critical childhood studies educator. Her art draws upon found and reclaimed objects and assemblage approaches using fragments\, fibers\, scraps\, gifts from nature\, and discarded objects—mending them into something beautiful and whole. Lauren has been showing her art since 2022 across the Philadelphia region.

SUMMARY:Poetry Circle & Connect: The Peace of Wild Things
DESCRIPTION:For as long as there has existed the written word\, people have written about the natural world. To explore their connection with and deepen their understanding of it. To express an appreciation for its beauty and to raise awareness about issues that threaten it. To reflect on their place within the larger ecosystem that includes us all. \nJoin us on the overlook hill at ChesLen Preserve (weather permitting) to celebrate National Poetry Month with an open share of nature-inspired poems. Share your own poems\, the poems of others you appreciate\, or simply listen.   \nThis event will be one for conversation and connection\, not critique; it is not intended as a workshop.   \nWe’ll gather at the Lenfest Center parking lot before walking to our space.  \nWhen despair for the world grows in me\nand I wake in the night at the least sound\nin fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be\,\nI go and lie down where the wood drake\nrests in his beauty on the water\, and the great heron feeds.\nI come into the peace of wild things\nwho do not tax their lives with forethought\nof grief. I come into the presence of still water.\nAnd I feel above me the day-blind stars\nwaiting with their light. For a time\nI rest in the grace of the world\, and am free.  \n– Wendell Berry

SUMMARY:Hepatica Hike - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:This event is sold out. Please join us at a future event. \nJoin event leaders on this off-trail exploration of a rarely visited section of the preserve. We’ll search the woods along Mine Run (a tributary of French Creek) to look for round-lobed hepatica\, one of the earliest-blooming spring ephemeral wildflowers. Boulder-hop through Deep Woods to find other harbingers of spring like wood anemone\, rue anemone\, and early violets.   \nThis part of the preserve has mature forest with diabase rock outcroppings. Though it looks pristine today\, it has a long history of human use\, including small quarry pits used to source cobblestones. A long-gone nearby railroad line (the Warwick branch of the Wilmington & Northern Railroad\, once known as the Boar’s Back\, today part of the Horse-Shoe Trail) is lingering evidence of this industrial period that extended into the early 20th century.  \nCan’t attend this one? Check out more dates and locations in our Spring Ephemeral Wildflower Wander series below: \n\nFriday\, April 10\, 1:00-2:30pm – Stoneleigh: a natural garden (Villanova\, PA) \nSunday\, April 12\, 1:00-3:30pm – Crow’s Nest Preserve (Elverson\, PA) \nSaturday\, April 18\, 9:00-11:30am – Sadsbury Woods Preserve (Coatesville\, PA) \nFriday\, May 1\, 10:00am-12:00pm – Saunders Woods Preserve (Gladwyne\, PA) \nSaturday\, May 2\, 10:00am-12:00pm – Mariton Wildlife Sanctuary (Easton\, PA) \nSaturday\, May 9\, 9:00-11:30am – Sadsbury Woods Preserve (Coatesville\, PA)

Local organists will perform a selection of sweeping musical pieces surrounded by the elegant beauty of the Tudor-revival style home. Come for the music and stay for the beauty of the garden sure to be in bloom in all its springtime glory.   \nAbout the organist: \nSince 1997\, Vincent M. Ryan has been Minister of Music at Advent Lutheran Church in Harleysville\, PA\, where he directs the church’s varied ensembles. He has vast experience accompanying soloists\, ensembles\, and choirs including the Gospel Choir of Wittenberg (Germany)\, The Lancaster-Franconia Choral Singers\, The WordFM Radio Choir\, and the Souderton Mens Chorus. SUMMARY:Beneficial Beavers: Learning through Art
DESCRIPTION:Happy International Beaver Day! Join us for our second nature journaling session in our Learning Through Art series in partnership with French Creek State Park\, where we’ll be shining a spotlight on North America’s largest rodent. Discover the remarkable world of beavers through hands‑on art and nature exploration. \nThis creative program blends natural history and guided observation to help us understand why beavers are essential ecosystem engineers. Participants will enjoy a relaxed\, supportive environment as they nature journal their way through learning about these fascinating mammals and the habitats they transform. \nAll you need to bring is a notebook or pad of paper\, a pencil or pen (materials will also be provided if you don’t have them)\, and your curiosity. Together we’ll discuss what nature journaling is and how to get started for any beginners\, as well as beaver Q&A as we watch for them at Hopewell Lake and linger into the twilight. \nThis workshop is part of an ongoing series where we will be partnering with a nature journaling ambassador\, Michele Murphy\, to explore and discover this mindful practice. Wisdom begins in wonder\, and we hope this series will inspire you to cultivate curiosity and creativity as you explore and connect with the parks and natural lands around us. \nMeet at French Creek State Park near Hopewell Lake (follow the link: https://maps.app.goo.gl/paidLZevCi4TYQVD7) \nFrench Creek State Park is located within the Schuylkill Highlands Conservation Landscape\, a place-based partnership administered by Natural Lands and funded in part by a grant from the Community Conservation Partnerships Program under the administration of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources\, Bureau of Recreation and Conservation.
