SUMMARY:Murmuration & Migrations: Spring Bird Walk
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the rhythms of spring as we explore the magic of birds on the move. During this guided walk led by our skilled Force of Nature volunteers\, we’ll watch for migrating species\, observe local birds as they prepare for nesting season\, and take in the flutter of winged life returning to the landscape. \nThe songbirds\, raptors\, waterfowl\, and shorebirds—about 300 recorded species—that rely on habitats under Natural Lands care are not just beautiful but also essential to the health of our planet. What’s more\, they are environmental indicators\, warning us of climate shifts and other ecosystem changes. \nLearn more about what Natural Lands is doing for bird conservation. \nCan’t attend this one? SUMMARY:Fungi Finds & Field Notes: A Nature Journaling Foray
DESCRIPTION:Discover the amazing world of fungi at the third session of our Learning Through Art series. In partnership with the Philly Mycology Club and our friends at French Creek State Park\, this immersive program blends natural history\, creativity\, and mindful observation as we explore one of the most fascinating branches of life on Earth. \nDuring this special session\, participants will join volunteer leaders from Philly MycoClub for an informal\, curiosity‑driven walk‑and‑talk through the woods. Along the way\, we’ll slow down to notice the forms\, colors\, and textures of the mushrooms and lichens around us—pausing for nature journaling as we learn. Afterward\, we’ll embark on a group foray\, scattering across the landscape to see what kinds of fungi are popping up and then regrouping to identify\, discuss\, and document our finds. \nWhether you’re enchanted by mushroom ecology\, interested in improving your field observation skills\, or simply excited to sketch and note what you discover\, this relaxed and supportive program offers space for all levels of experience. Together\, we’ll explore why fungi are essential contributors to healthy ecosystems\, how to look for them responsibly\, and how journaling can deepen your relationship with the natural world. \nThis event will consist of an informal walk-and-talk as well as a foray. All you need to bring is a notebook or pad of paper\, a pencil or pen (materials will also be provided if you don’t have them)\, and your curiosity. We’ll take a moment to introduce the practice of nature journaling for any beginners\, offering prompts and simple techniques to help you observe\, record\, and engage with fungi in meaningful ways. \nMeet at Scott’s Run Lake parking lot (follow the link for direct meeting location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/xLtnSGKFCo7Y6Cj67) \nThis workshop is part of our ongoing Learning Through Art series\, where we partner with nature journaling ambassador Michele Murphy to cultivate creativity\, curiosity\, and connection across our parks and preserves. Wisdom begins in wonder—and we hope this series inspires you to explore\, reflect\, and notice more deeply each time you step outside. \nFrench Creek State Park is located within the Schuylkill Highlands Conservation Landscape\, a place-based partnership administered by Natural Lands and funded in part by a grant from the Community Conservation Partnerships Program under the administration of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources\, Bureau of Recreation and Conservation.
