SUMMARY:Fungi Finds & Field Notes: A Nature Journaling Foray
DESCRIPTION:Discover the amazing world of fungi at the third session of our Learning Through Art series. In partnership with the Philly Mycology Club and our friends at French Creek State Park\, this immersive program blends natural history\, creativity\, and mindful observation as we explore one of the most fascinating branches of life on Earth. \nDuring this special session\, participants will join volunteer leaders from Philly MycoClub for an informal\, curiosity‑driven walk‑and‑talk through the woods. Along the way\, we’ll slow down to notice the forms\, colors\, and textures of the mushrooms and lichens around us—pausing for nature journaling as we learn. Afterward\, we’ll embark on a group foray\, scattering across the landscape to see what kinds of fungi are popping up and then regrouping to identify\, discuss\, and document our finds. \nWhether you’re enchanted by mushroom ecology\, interested in improving your field observation skills\, or simply excited to sketch and note what you discover\, this relaxed and supportive program offers space for all levels of experience. Together\, we’ll explore why fungi are essential contributors to healthy ecosystems\, how to look for them responsibly\, and how journaling can deepen your relationship with the natural world. \nThis event will consist of an informal walk-and-talk as well as a foray. All you need to bring is a notebook or pad of paper\, a pencil or pen (materials will also be provided if you don’t have them)\, and your curiosity. We’ll take a moment to introduce the practice of nature journaling for any beginners\, offering prompts and simple techniques to help you observe\, record\, and engage with fungi in meaningful ways. \nMeet at Scott’s Run Lake parking lot (follow the link for direct meeting location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/xLtnSGKFCo7Y6Cj67) \nThis workshop is part of our ongoing Learning Through Art series\, where we partner with nature journaling ambassador Michele Murphy to cultivate creativity\, curiosity\, and connection across our parks and preserves. Wisdom begins in wonder—and we hope this series inspires you to explore\, reflect\, and notice more deeply each time you step outside. \nFrench Creek State Park is located within the Schuylkill Highlands Conservation Landscape\, a place-based partnership administered by Natural Lands and funded in part by a grant from the Community Conservation Partnerships Program under the administration of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources\, Bureau of Recreation and Conservation.

SUMMARY:Nature as Healer: A (Grief) Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:“The people cannot be healed until the land is healed. The land cannot be healed until the people are healed by the land.” – Martin Prechtel\, author  \nNature can be a great healer for the heartaches we all experience along our journey. Join Naila Francis\, founder of This Hallowed Wilderness\, for a writing workshop to explore the restorative power of nature. \nTogether\, we will walk through the shady woods and sunny meadows of Gwynedd Preserve\, listening to our inner voices\, on this inspiring nature immersion that also invites us into reciprocal relationship with the land and wildlife.    \nBring a notebook and a writing instrument for this workshop. (We will also have some available.)    \nYou will be invited to share whatever you wish in a “sacred circle\,” but this is not required. The intent of this event is to bring people together\, whatever their losses and struggles\, and to connect with others and the natural world at their own comfort level.   \nOur stroll through the woods will be silent\, followed by some meditative time in the Betz Memorial Garden\, and quiet reflection.   \nPlease save the rain date in the event of inclement weather: Sunday\, June 7\, 1:00 – 3:00 PM.   \nAbout our instructor: Naila is a grief coach and death midwife who companions people on their grief journey through multiple spaces and practices\, including meditations in nature and the written word.

SUMMARY:Wild Materials: Transforming Found Objects into Art - new date
DESCRIPTION:Sticks\, stones\, shells\, seeds\, feathers\, bark\, river glass\, found objects\, fibers\, paint…  \nUsing a playful mix of natural materials and unexpected treasures\, we’ll come together to create art. A selection of recycled wooden cigar boxes will be provided for you to choose from and transform. You don’t need to bring anything—however\, you’re welcome to bring small personal objects if you’d like to incorporate them into your piece.  \nEach participant will select a cigar box that will become the stage for imagination and playful making. Our instructor\, Lauren J. Silver\, will open the workshop with a brief introduction to her found-object artmaking practice. Together\, we’ll discuss our intentions for the workshop\, then settle into plenty of time to relax\, experiment\, have fun\, and create side by side.  \nThis workshop is beginner-friendly\, and no prior art or assemblage experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to explore.  \nPlease note: we uphold “Leave No Trace” practices at our preserves\, meaning we take only memories with us. This policy will remain in place during the workshop. We encourage participants to bring found objects from home\, as no materials will be collected from the preserve during the event.  \nAbout the instructor: Lauren J. Silver is a Philadelphia-based\, mixed-medium artist and critical childhood studies educator. Her art draws upon found and reclaimed objects and assemblage approaches using fragments\, fibers\, scraps\, gifts from nature\, and discarded objects—mending them into something beautiful and whole. Lauren has been showing her art since 2022 across the Philadelphia region.

SUMMARY:In Color Birding Book Club: Migrations
DESCRIPTION:Join our partners\, Philadelphia-based In Color Birding\, for their very first Book Club gathering\, where bird joy meets storytelling. \nOn Wednesday\, June 10th\, we are coming together at the Parkway Central Library to dive into Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy\, a powerful\, atmospheric novel that follows one woman’s journey alongside the last Arctic terns in a rapidly changing world. It is a story about movement\, loss\, love\, and what we hold onto when everything feels uncertain\, and we cannot wait to hear what it stirred up for you. \nThis will not be a lecture. It is a conversation. We will spend about 90 minutes reflecting on what moved us\, what challenged us\, and what we are still sitting with. Whether you finished the book\, started it\, or are just curious\, you are welcome here. \nLike all of In Color Birding Club’s gatherings\, this space is rooted in community\, curiosity\, and connection. Come as you are. Bring your thoughts\, your questions\, your perspectives\, or just come to listen. \nNeed a copy of the book? You can borrow it through the Free Library or Libby\, grab one from your local bookstore\, or use Bookshop.org or Libro.fm\, and if cost is a barrier\, In Color Birding has you covered. \nWe’ll be gathering on the 4th floor in a conference room which holds 40 people comfortably. SUMMARY:Friday Organ Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Organ Historical Society (OHS) and Natural Lands present Friday Organ Concerts in the Main House at Stoneleigh. Join us for noontime concerts this spring featuring Stoneleigh’s mighty Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ. Local organists will perform a selection of sweeping musical pieces surrounded by the elegant beauty of the Tudor-revival style home. June’s concert will feature musical selections on the organ and trumpet. \nAbout the musicians: \n   \nEdward Landin Senn began his intensive musical training at the St. Thomas Choir School in New York City under the direction of Gerre and Judith Hancock. He continued his studies at Interlochen Arts Academy\, where he studied organ with Thomas Bara\, and later earned a Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance from Westminster Choir College. At Westminster\, he studied organ with Ken Cowan and harpsichord with Kathleen Scheide. \nFrom 2013 to 2025\, Edward served as Assistant Director of Music at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church in Bryn Mawr\, PA. His previous church appointments include Christ Church United Methodist (New York City)\, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church (Morristown\, NJ)\, and Grace Epiphany Episcopal Church (Philadelphia\, PA). \nEdward has performed in recital throughout the United States and internationally in the Czech Republic\, France\, Germany\, and Wales. A passionate advocate for new music\, he has commissioned works from composers including Carson Cooman\, Pamela Decker\, and Craig Phillips. \nHe currently works for the Organ Historical Society\, based in Villanova\, PA\, and remains active as a freelance musician\, performing on organ and piano\, and composing on commission. \n \nSteven Heitzer\, a native Philadelphian\, is an active classical trumpet player in the tri-state area.  He is a member of Opera Philadelphia\, Bach Festival Orchestra of Bethlehem\, Reading Symphony and Ocean City Pops Orchestra.  He is also a frequent performer with Delaware Symphony\, Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia\, Philadelphia Ballet Orchestra\, Lancaster Symphony\, and the Walnut Street Theatre. \nSteve’s many performing credits include Dave Brubeck\, Branford Marsalis\, Don Rickles\, Peter Nero and Luciano Pavoratti among others.  Steven’s main musical interest besides playing the trumpet is arranging music.  He has scored nearly 200 brass arrangements for Philadelphia Brass\, the Delaware Symphony\, Ocean City Pops Orchestra as well as works for various choirs and organists around the Philadelphia region.  He received his undergraduate degree from Temple University and his master’s degree from Manhattan School of Music. \nHe lives in Philadelphia with his wife Kelly\, a jazz vocalist and music therapist. In his spare time\, when not arranging music\, Steve enjoys old movies\, spy novels\, and crossword puzzles. \nSchedule of organists:  \n\nMarch 6: Kevin O’Malia   \n\n\nApril 10: Vincent Ryan  \n\n\nMay 1: Margaret Harper  \n\n\nJune 12: Edward Landin Senn featuring trumpeter Steven Heitzer

SUMMARY:Summer Barn Concert & Potluck Heartsongs & Harvest
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Crow’s Nest Preserve’s beautifully rustic barn for a special evening of music\, food\, and community. This cozy winter gathering will feature an intimate performance by Anna Spackman. \nWe invite you to bring a dish to share and enjoy a potluck dinner with fellow guests before the concert.  \n \nAbout the artist: Anna Spackman delivers a soulful acoustic performance with songs that will linger in audience’s heads and hearts. After performing her early songs at the Steel City Open Mic as a teenager\, she moved to Oregon for several years\, soaking up indie\, folk\, and R&B influences of the local music scene. Having returned to Phoenixville\, Anna has shared the stage with Amy Correia\, Lucy Kaplansky\, and Chris Pureka. Anna’s soaring vocals and complex musical landscapes pay tribute to songwriters such as Joni Mitchell\, Shawn Colvin\, and Ani DiFranco. Anna has four albums and one EP available on all streaming services\, and bonus tracks up on her Bandcamp. Her newer songs explore hope and resilience in the face of oppressive systems\, and seek to connect us back to ourselves and one another.
